Clinical waste incineration

We are responsible for the removal of Clinical Waste from all the hospitals, clinics, laboratories, dental surgeries, retirement homes, veterinary clinics, laboratories, pharmacies and detox centres.

EWMS was granted a 20 year contract by the Government of Gibraltar in 2008, this contract was for the construction and operation of a Clinical Waste Incinerator at Governor’s Cottage site. Included as part of the operation is the daily collection and removal of Clinical Waste from all the hospitals, clinics, laboratories, dental surgeries, retirement homes, veterinary clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, detox centres etc. to the EWMS Incinerator for subsequent incineration.

Construction of the project was completed in May 2008, and since this date the collection and destruction of all of Gibraltar’s Clinical Waste has been carried out locally by EWMS at its Incinerator plant.

All clinical waste producers are given a Waste Transfer Note detailing the type, quantity, date and other details regarding the waste collected and origin. This is a legal obligation, in order to keep track on waste movements and satisfy the local Environmental Agencies requirements with regard to hazardous waste audits.

The plant

The plant installed at Governor’s Cottage site is a state-of-the-art dedicated clinical waste incinerator, manufactured and installed by ATI Muller Incinerators. The equipment is a model HP 750 with a flue gas treatment system designed to neutralise and filter out all noxious particulates from the flue gases. The outcome is a smokeless flue effluent that is being constantly monitored to ensure that the filtration system is doing its work and ensuring that levels of emissions fall within European Community set limit.
