Port chemist services

Health & Safety Consultants Ltd provides a range of services to the shipping and maritime sector. These services are varied and are as follows:

Port entry certification

In order for chemical, gas or oil tankers to enter the Port for repairs or other requirements, it is essential that a registered Port Chemist certifies the ship as safe for entry. This entails measuring all the vessels’ cargo and slops tanks for flammable gases and ensuring that these are well ventilated and at acceptable levels.

Confined entry certificates

Works involving tank entry can be very dangerous due to inadequate ventilation of spaces and low oxygen levels. Unauthorised entry into a confined space can lead to death by asphyxiation. At H&S Consultants, our Port Chemist will ensure that the confined space atmosphere has been checked for oxygen content, and flammable and toxic gas levels prior to entry. Once checked, a procedure must be set up for ventilation, supervision, rescue, etc, which will need to be specified on the Confined space entry permits.

Hot work permits

Hot work permits: ALL types of maritime vessels entering Gibraltar Port Authority waters must be issued with a Hot works permit by the Gibraltar Port Chemist prior to any works on board involving the use of welding, oxy-acetylene or cutting and grinding, as these works can cause fire/explosions on board if not suitably planned and prepared. Our Port Chemist will carry out an on-site assessment of the works and ensure that tanks, stores, spaces involved with the repairs are adequately prepared to prevent fire on-board.
